My approach to counseling is holistic. I consider the body, mind, and spirit in the evaluation and therapy that I do. In individual therapy, I use talking therapy to explore both conscious and unconscious motivations. If indicated, I will also utilize behavioral and creative therapy techniques. These techniques include assertiveness training and art therapy. In couples therapy I will often utilize psychodrama and role playing to help simulate a situation and to help the couple find new ways of communicating with each other.
Working with me is like visiting an old friend that you can trust to listen and witness what is happening to you. I received a Masters and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from New York University in 1979. I received a Masters in Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1973. I worked as a Psychologist, teacher, and supervisor in Private Practice, and in College and Graduate School Programs for over twenty years. I am also a visual artist and writer.

Susan has been a licensed clinical social worker for over 20 years. She began her career in the San Francisco Bay Area graduating from the University of California at Berkeley with a master’s degree in social work with a concentration in community mental health. She earned her undergraduate degree in psychology cum laude from Pomona College in Claremont, California, and has a master of arts in public policy from Claremont Graduate University. Although she is not a native of New Mexico, she spent her later teenage years in Santa Fe and family members have lived here since 1968.
Susan returned to UNM at CARS in November 2007 after working in Colorado for two years. From 1997 to 2005 she worked at the UNM Children’s Psychiatric Center after completing a post graduate fellowship there in 1997. During that time she also worked at UNM Children’s Hospital as a member of the child and adolescent psychiatry consultation team. In 1992 she had the privilege of being part of a delegation of human services professionals who traveled to Russia and Lithuania to explore those countries’ social service systems.
Susan has many years of practice in child and adolescent mental health, psychotherapy and crisis intervention with adults and children in a wide variety of settings. Her primary clinical framework is existential – how do we come to terms with the hand we are dealt as unique human beings and how do we best navigate our way through our time and experience on the planet with our fellows. She employs practical psychotherapeutic approaches, problem solving and life choices skills in the context of these larger questions.
